Nicolette Ripepi

Nicolette Ripepi

Parent
Nicolette Ripepi

Profession:
Founder and Director of Autism Connect

Age of parents:
41

Child’s name:
Tyler

Age: 11 Years

Is this your only child?
No.

Diagnosis of child:
A diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD

What are the biggest challenges facing your child on a daily basis?
Not being able to express his needs as Tyler is still pre-verbal and has never uttered a single word in his life. His sensory disturbances are his biggest hindrance in his development and progress.

What are the happiest moments you have with your child on a daily basis?
He is just such a pleasant child – because I work at the centre where he is placed, he runs into my office when he gets a gap to run out of the classroom.

Are you married?
Divorced.

Has your special needs child had an effect on your marriage?
Hugely hence the divorce.

My ex-husband was elated when he found out we were expecting a boy baby. He had huge plans for this son and bought him the most expensive ruby outfit, as he was a devout ruby fanatic. Jeremy’s dreams were shattered by Tyler ‘s diagnoses. He gave up on his son when realised he would not be a ‘normal’ kids and took to drinking excessively. It obviously had a major impact on the family and the marriage as a whole.

Are your family and friends supportive?
Not really. I am a one-woman show, my ex-husband suffered a major stroke two years ago and he has no family to support him. He is living with us, which has put a major strain on the kids and me. I’m not beating around the bush on this one.

What has your child taught you about yourself, both positively and negatively?
Persevering, not giving up, tenacity and the drive to make a difference in Tyler’s life and so many others.

Do you take time out, if so what do you do to relax?
Hardly. If I get the opportunity I like to spend time with friends, listen to music and enjoy sometime away.

What has made the biggest difference to your child’s quality of life?
The fact that Tyler has progressed significantly, despite the struggles that our family have faced. By starting the Autism Connect Centre I have given him a real chance in life. Tyler had been denied access to other special needs schools.

What is your dream for your child?
For Tyler to live his life to the full, he has been denied so many things because of his differences. To be independent in all aspects of life.
